The transition from soil to LECA is perhaps the most difficult and daunting part of switching to semi-hydro but don't worry, this (much shorter) second episode of my Let's Learn LECA series shows you step by step how to move your plant to LECA. First, choose your plant and the container you want to put it in. I have several different methods that work for me; nursery pot inside of a closed container, terracotta pot sitting in a deep plastic catch tray, glass jars, or plastic cups. The possibilities are endless! Once you've chosen which plant you'd like to put in which pot, clean the soil off the roots. I personally think the best time to do this for most plants is on the day they need watered. This makes it easier to get the soil off the roots. Be sure to get as much of the soil off as you possibly can. Too much soil attached to the roots will cause it to become overwatered when the soil hangs on to too much moisture. Next, fill your container about 1/3 to 1/2 full of your choice size of LECA. LECA, hydroton, semi-hydro, clay pebbles, (and more) they're all synonymous. I choose to use the "giant" size at the bottom then the smaller sizes at the top so I can conserve space and save money. Place the plant in and stabilize it by covering the roots and possibly the base of the plant (depending on the plant) with LECA. Fill with your choice nutrient solution or plain water (see Let's Learn LECA Ep. 1 for more information about how to water and fertilize your semi-hydro plants). As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! I may not know the answer to every question but I sure-as-heck will try to help you find the right answers!
