Hello! I’m John Russell. Let’s continue our exploration of common words, phrases, and questions in American English. Today, we will continue our lessons involving directions. We will play a kind of game in which you will hear me speak at a normal speed. Your job will be to decide where to go on the map you see presented on your screen. Let’s start. Imagine you are walking down the street. You ask a person the following question: Excuse me. Where is the post office? This is what the person says: You’ll see it just around the corner – on the left. Pause the video to consider your answer. You heard a couple of structures we studied in previous lessons: “around the corner” and “on the left.” Here is how you can find the post office. Now let’s try a different example. Imagine you are in a building. You ask a person where the human resources (HR) office is located. The person tells you this: Walk straight ahead. HR will be the third door on the right. Pause the video to consider your answer. You heard a couple of structures we studied in previous lessons: “straight ahead,” “on the right,” as well as the ordinal number “third.” Here is how you can find the HR office. That’s all for today! Keep up the good work. --------- Learning English is Voice of America’s multimedia source of news and information for millions of English learners worldwide.
