USS Kitty Hawk: The US Navy Carrier That Crushed a Soviet Nuclear Spy Sub

The submarine is supposed to be the hunter. The surface ship is supposed to be the prey. On March 21, 1984, the USS Kitty Hawk flipped the script. During the tense "Team Spirit" exercises in the Sea of Japan, a Soviet Victor I-class nuclear submarine (K-314) attempted to shadow an American supercarrier in the middle of a winter storm. The Soviet Captain was aggressive. He tried to get inside the carrier's formation. But he forgot two things: 1. His single-screw propulsion made him deaf when sprinting. 2. Bernoulli's Principle. When the 80,000-ton carrier ran over the 4,000-ton submarine, it didn't just humiliate the Soviet Navy. It embedded a piece of the Soviet propeller directly into the American hull—handing the US Navy one of the greatest intelligence trophies of the Cold War.
