First off, I've worked on this cover over the last 2 weeks, this amazing piece had so many layers and little things for my ear to figure out. The music is really simple in some parts but oh so complex in others, especially the end. The outro of this song is probably one of my favourite musical moments of all time. I remember hearing it for the first time at the end of a BB's documentary in grade ten and I just kept rewinding the tape and re-watching. I was in awe and it hit me in the feels, I just cried, what a beautiful and heart wrenching ending to a song. Actually now that I think about it, in high school we had to choose a song in English class to share with the class and analyze the lyrics and this was my song choice- the other kids probably thought I was nuts and definitely all picked contemporary pop songs to analyze but not me! (Haha fun fact: my nickname in high school was Wilson because everyone knew how obsessed I was, I would come to school dressed in blue striped shirts or like Brian from the Pet Sounds era with black rimmed glasses from the dollar store with the lenses popped out. I also quizzed all my friends on all the Beach Boys and info about them. What a weird kid 🤣) I would probably put this tune in my top 10 favourite BB's songs. I like a lot of tracks from the album 'Surf's Up' actually- Long Promised Road, Feel Flows and 'Till I Die are just amazing too, but Surf's Up is a 4 1/2 min masterpiece. I often don't want to cover my absolute favourite songs, probably why I haven't touched God Only Knows or Heroes and Villains or I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, some kind of fear that they won't turn out exactly right. I have been working more on my recording skills lately though and thought this would be a really cool experiment with all the different instruments and levels to it. Now, some glaring points. I chose to keep it in the original key because it just didn't feel right to change it which worked out great for the high notes in the first verse but clearly this song sits at the absolute bottom of my voice and range, so I wouldn't say it's my finest vocal performance ever but that was my choice by not transposing it higher, I'm still happy with it! If some of the video isn't perfectly synced that's because this was a huge amount of files for my computer to process and the playback lagged, so any timing issues I tried to sort but it's not perfect. You'll notice I didn't put a video of every single layer of the song (I didn't video me playing all the horns and vocals at the end or percussion), this is because it was already so big and hard to work with but yeah, so many parts in this song, totally crazy! I love the Beach Boys with every ounce of my being. There songs changed and affected my life in a massive way and are a huge reason why I fell in love with music, the voice and pursued music as a career. With this in mind, I hope you'll have a listen to this cover and know how much joy it brought me to make it.
