Jan. 9 on The Story: Operating at full capacity, the Oregon State Hospital has been struggling for several years now to balance the needs of the criminal justice system and the rights of patients. On both sides, the state's system for mandatory mental health treatment is subject to court orders. This week, Disability Rights Oregon filed a motion asking the court to hold Oregon in contempt for failing to admit criminal defendants found unable to aid and assist with their own defense within the court-mandated seven days. Previous rulings have faulted the state for allowing mentally ill defendants to wait in jail without the secure treatment they might require. Tonight, we dig into this latest twist in the long-running conflict over Oregon's faltering system for involuntary mental health treatment, an investigative series we call Uncommitted.
