Answer 1: Some people have physical restrictions but virtually everyone can do splits pads on because the knee pad elevation. For example, I have hip slight impingement but I can still do splits after a good warm up. Common question 2: You have said that "Most likely no pro hockey for you if you can't do splits" is that true? Answer 2: When you look at pro goalies most of them are very flexible and most of them can do splits at least in controlled environment. But not everyone can do what Bob or Vasy does because everyone is not blessed with hips like them. Flexibility is a sign of your daily habits and routines. If you do flexibility / mobility training properly on daily basis most likely you can do splits. Based on 20+ years of coaching experience stiff goalies usually don't make it because they lack motivation of doing what is needed when nobody is looking and those who are flexible do other things too better than average guy. Flexibility is not a magic pill but one of the areas you should be good at if you wanna play pro. ==== IN THE ZONE - Learn how to get into the zone and play on top of your game everyday In the zone is a warm up routine I have developed over the years that has been used by goalies who have won U20 world championships, broken NCAA D1 all time records and signed NHL contracts. There is not really point to go all out in every shot. Gradually increase the tempo and towards the end of the warm up go game speed. For off-ice warm up before the ice warm up I have the same advice. Youth / junior goalies who may not have that long ice warm up need to do longer off-ice warm up to be game ready when the puck drops.
