Dr. Supriya Shah presented Raag Madhuvanti in the World Sitar Festival on 15th August, 2020. One of the finest and most sought after women sitar players of the present generation, Dr. Supriya Shah is a sitarist of high repute and belongs to the Maihar Gharana. Supriya’s training in music started at the tender age of 13, under the tutelage of Pt. Satish Chandra, a disciple of Bharat Ratna Pt. Ravi Shankar. Thereafter, she learnt the rigid grammar of music and the advanced techniques of sitar from Late Pt. Uma Shankar Mishra, who was amongst the senior most disciples of Pt. Ravi Shankar. Dr. Supriya Shah is currently further honing her musical skills under the able guidance of Grammy award winner Padma Bhushan Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Currently a Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Instrumental Music, Faculty of Performing Arts, B.H.U., Varanasi, she has been performing in various prestigious concerts and is a graded artist of All India Radio. All her performances have been highly appreciated by connoisseurs and music lovers. Dr. Shah has been making a mark in the field of music and academics as a stage artist, a mentor and a cultural Motivator. As a BHU Faculty member, she has been training countless students over a career spanning nearly a decade and a half.She has also been training some students overseas through her online classes. Dr. Shah has also authored a book on the changing trends in North Indian Classical Instrumental Music. Dr. Supriya Shah has made invaluable contribution in the field of music by supervising research on various important aspects of music. Various research scholars have benefitted from her able guidance and knowledge. In the pursuit of peace Swaranjali, in association with Pracheen Kala Kendra, Navras School of Performing Arts, Deshe-Bideshe TV, Next Huddle and Gunijankhana is organising World Sitar Festival on 15th August, 2020. Sitarists from all parts of the world are going to perform in this cloud concert. This will be one of the rarest occasion when audience will experience the convergence of all Gharanas of Sitar. There will be a section of rare archival recordings of Sitar starting from the first recording of the sound of Sitar of 1904. The first of its kind initiative in the history of music when artists from all over the globe join their hands on the strings of the melodious and fantabulous instrument Sitar. This World Sitar Festival has everything about Sitar. Apart from 32 live performances of 27 Raags, it has the history of Sitar, rare archival recordings of Sitar from the gone by era including the first recorded sound of Sitar. Stories, anecdotes and history of Sitar fills the grand stage of World Sitar Festival.
