Watch massive manta rays perform incredible acrobatics just inches away as they feed on plankton during our unforgettable night snorkeling adventure in Kona! We experienced the ultimate Big Island Hawaii bucket list activity: manta ray night snorkeling with Ocean Eco Tours in Kailua-Kona. This was our first time snorkeling at night, and we were absolutely blown away when giant manta rays surrounded us, feeding on plankton attracted by the underwater light base. Ocean Eco Tours provided an intimate, private experience with only 12-15 passengers on their zodiac boat, compared to other tour operators who pack 40+ people onto larger vessels. This smaller group size meant we had unobstructed views and personal space to fully immerse ourselves in this magical encounter. What made Ocean Eco Tours stand out was their professional-grade equipment. They provided waist belt flotation devices instead of the awkward pool noodles that other companies use, making it much easier to hold onto the light platform and stay comfortable throughout the experience. Swimming skills are not required, you just need to be comfortable in the ocean and breathing through snorkel gear. During our night dive, we witnessed two manta rays performing breathtaking acrobatics, barrel rolls, and graceful loops as they filter-fed on the dense plankton clouds. These gentle giants, with wingspans up to 18 feet, came so close they nearly touched us!
