Professor Graham Oppy is the among the world’s most influential living atheist philosophers. He is the author of hundreds of scholarly publications spanning the fields of metaphysics, epistemology, religion, naturalism, induction and argumentation theory. His books range from introductory texts on theism and atheism to highly technical analyses of the requirements of logical argument. These include Arguing about Gods, Atheism: The Basics and The Best Argument Against God. One of the aims of this podcast is to communicate philosophy to non-philosophers (and I count myself among the latter). So, my questions to Graham today will address a broad range of concepts, where we have shared interests. Imagine a Venn diagram in which one circle is much larger than the other. The larger circle represents Graham’s knowledge. The smaller circle represents my knowledge. The small area of their intersection is what we will discuss today. I have been fortunate to discuss a broad range of philosophical issues with Graham over the course of my studies at Monash University. Despite his position as a renowned philosopher, Graham has always generously volunteered his time and taken my philosophical questions seriously. In this podcast, Graham and I discussed: the origins of his interest in philosophy, atheism, theism, arguments for and against the existence of God, naturalism, his upcoming book on argumentation theory, secular morality and his advice for early-career philosophers.
