Most Catholics have never heard this story, and the truth is far more complicated, more honest, and more important than anything you will find in a typical history class. In this video, we go all the way back to the Frankish kingdom, to Charlemagne and the Carolingian Empire, to uncover a history that swings between remarkable cooperation and devastating failure, and what it means for Catholics today. ✡️ Did you know that Charlemagne's most trusted diplomat to the Muslim Caliph of Baghdad was a Jewish man named Isaac the Jew? That he returned from his mission leading an enormous elephant named Abul-Abbas through the streets of Italy as a gift from Harun al-Rashid? That under the Carolingian rulers, Jewish communities in Frankish territories enjoyed legal protections, land rights, and commercial freedoms that were extraordinary by the standards of the medieval world? This is a part of history that almost nobody talks about, and it changes everything about how we understand the relationship between Christian civilization and the Jewish people. ⚔️ But the story does not stay hopeful for long. When the First Crusade was launched in 1095, something terrible happened in the very Rhine valley towns where Jewish communities had lived peacefully for generations. Crowds of armed men turned on their neighbors in Speyer, Worms, and Mainz, killing thousands of Jewish men, women, and children. The Archbishop of Mainz tried to stop it. Christian families in Cologne hid Jewish families in their homes at personal risk. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux personally traveled to the Rhineland to confront a monk who was preaching violence against Jewish communities during the Second Crusade. A Jewish rabbi later wrote that Bernard's intervention saved what remained of Jewish life in Germany. These are real stories, and they demand to be told. 📖 At the heart of all of this is a theological truth that Saint Paul planted in the Church from the very beginning and that the Church has never officially abandoned, even when Christian civilization failed to live it. In Romans 11, Paul describes the Jewish people as branches of a cultivated olive tree, and Gentile Christians as wild branches grafted into that same tree. He warns against arrogance toward the natural branches. He declares that the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. The Second Vatican Council reaffirmed this in Nostra Aetate in 1965, condemning antisemitism in all its forms and reminding the whole Church that the Jewish people remain beloved by God. 🙏 This video does not offer easy answers or comfortable conclusions. It tells the honest story of a civilization that built itself on the sacred texts of Israel, chanted the Hebrew Psalms, celebrated feasts rooted in Jewish sacred history, and still failed catastrophically to see the image of God in the actual Jewish people living among them. It also tells the story of the Catholics in every generation who got it right, who stood up, who hid families, who wrote letters, who traveled to stop violence because their faith actually meant something to them. 💬 Whether you are a lifelong Catholic, someone exploring the faith, or simply a lover of honest history, this video has something for you.
