Sadhguru Center Speaker Series are monthly virtual lecture-discussions highlighting the research and explorations of our multidisciplinary community of distinguished scientists, global experts, and thought leaders. In this talk, Dr. Elissa Epel, PhD presents "Stress and Aging: How psychological stress impacts cellular aging process" where she discusses the following: (1) The differences between toxic stress and positive hormetic stress on biological aging, (2) Effects of stress arousal reduction vs. stress enhancement interventions (hormetic stress) on wellbeing and biological aging, and (3) Challenges of coping with existential global stressors and the role of contemplative interventions. Elissa Epel, PhD, is a Professor and Vice Chair at the University of California, San Francisco. She studies “contemplative health psychology,” how chronic stress can impact mental health and biological aging throughout the lifespan, including the intergenerational transmission of health, and how contemplative interventions may promote emotional wellbeing, resilience, and physiological thriving, especially in the face of existential stress. Epel has co-written a book for the public with Elizabeth Blackburn, The Telomere Effect (2017), a NYT bestseller under Science, in 30 languages. In 2022, she wrote The Stress Prescription, a short and practical focused book. Her work has been featured in venues such as TEDMED, NBC’s Today Show, CBS’s Morning Show, 60 minutes, National Public Radio, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Wisdom 2.0, Health 2.0, and in many science documentaries.
