The Gelderlander is a powerful and elegant warmblood horse breed from the Netherlands, known for its high-stepping action, strong build, and refined appearance. Originally bred for carriage work and farm labor, the Gelderlander is now appreciated for both driving and riding disciplines, especially in combined driving and dressage The Gelderlander horse originated in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands during the 19th century. Breeders aimed to develop a versatile horse that could work on farms during the week and pull carriages on Sundays. To achieve this, they crossed local mares with Andalusian, Hackney, Thoroughbred, and Norman stallions, resulting in a horse with power, elegance, and expressive movement. In the mid-20th century, with the decline of working horses due to mechanization, the Gelderlander was selectively bred into the Dutch Warmblood (KWPN) for sport performance. However, a dedicated effort has preserved the pure Gelderlander line as a separate group within the KWPN registry. Today, the Gelderlander remains a symbol of Dutch heritage and continues to excel in competitive driving and as a stylish riding horse.
