Breeders aimed to develop a versatile horse that could work on farms during the week and pull carriages on Sundays. To achieve this, they crossed local mares with Andalusian, Hackney, Thoroughbred, and Norman stallions, resulting in a horse with power, elegance, and expressive movement. In the mid-20th century, with the decline of working horses due to mechanization, the Gelderlander was selectively bred into the Dutch Warmblood (KWPN) for sport performance. However, a dedicated effort has preserved the pure Gelderlander line as a separate group within the KWPN registry.
