The VFD shown running our test motor in this video is an ACS 880 series motor control by ABB. This particular motor control is a 480vac drive and is rated at 125 hp. The ABB ACS880-01 series of drives are customized by ABB to meet the needs of specific industries, such as oil and gas, mining, metals, chemicals, cement, power plants, material handling, pulp and paper, sawmills, marine, water and wastewater, food and beverage, and automotive. They are made to control a wide range of equipment from these industries, such as cranes, extruders, winches, winders, conveyors, mixers, compressors, centrifuges, test benches, elevators, pumps and fans. We received this motor control from a lumber operation where they were using it to operate a large crane to move timber to their sawmill. This motor control had a lockout fault when we received it and would not come out of the error condition. We performed a complete rebuild on this drive and once we powered it up the locked up faults that prevented the drive from turning a motor were gone and the drive was now fully functional again. We tested this drive in both directions and as seen in the video the operation on our motor was as smooth as it gets, so we returned the drive back to the customer for reinstallation in their crane. ERD has decades of experience with all the types of motor controls and we own 100’s of test motors ranging in size from a 50hp ac induction motor to very small incremental hp drives that are used in precision control systems, such as robots.
