In this next video, Doc Pop discusses a weight loss surgery operation approved by the FDA in 2001 called the adjustable gastric banding often referred to as Lap Band surgery. "A gastric band is like a belt that wraps around and behind the upper part of the stomach. On the inside of that band is a balloon that attaches to a tube and port. This allows the surgeon to add water to the port that will fill the balloon which restricts the opening from the upper stomach to the lower stomach." In this video, Dr. Poplawski, a Ypsilanti Bariatric surgeon of 14-years and over 3,000 bariatric surgeries, discusses the adjustable gastric band during one of his free weight loss surgery seminars. You will view a model of the adjustable gastric band, see how it works in conjunction with your digestive anatomy and understand some of the common questions asked. Questions answered in this video: Q: How quickly can I go home after having adjustable gastric band surgery? A: Gastric banding, done in the hospital, takes less than an hour with a patient under general anesthetic. The next step is to have the patient go to X-ray to check for correct positioning of the gastric band and to verify that it is working properly when a patient drinks fluids and simple foods. Most patients go home right after that, on the same day as their gastric band surgery. Q: When I come back to fill the gastric band will it hurt? A: Most patients after they have the first gastric band fill ask "Is that it?" They get nervous about the procedure but realize that it is not a big deal. Q: What type of follow up is required after gastric banding surgery. A: Patients need to follow up with their bariatric surgeon 2 weeks after the gastric band surgery to check the wounds and meet with a nutritional therapist. After 6 weeks, they check in again for their first fill of the balloon on the Lap Band. Patients then come back to the office every 3-4 weeks to add water to the gastric band until it is "just right". Just right is unique for each patient and will depend on how each patient feels about feed. Q: How many visits does it take to reach the "Just right" level of the proper amount of water in the gastric band? A: For most patients it takes 6-7 visits to reach the "just right" level. Q: How much weight will I lose with an adjustable gastric band? A: After the band is adjusted to the "just right" level for you, most patients lose 1-2 pounds each week.
