Fermé en 2004 suite à l'échec de la candidature de la ville pour les Jeux olympiques de 2016, il est passé aux mains de l'Atlético Madrid en 2013. Reconstruit, le stade a rouvert ses portes au public le 16 septembre 2017, lors du match entre l'Atlético Madrid et Malaga en Liga. Le stade, qui pouvait accueillir 20 000 spectateurs à sa fermeture, a rouvert ses portes avec 68 456 places après sa reconstruction. En septembre 2023, sa capacité a été portée à 70 460 places.
