STORYLINE: About twenty people protested near the Japanese Embassy in Moscow on Tuesday to support Russia in a decades-old dispute with Japan over a chain of tiny Pacific islands. The members of the radical Young Russia youth group said they came to the embassy to confirm that Russians will not give the Kurils back to Japan. The protesters beat drums and chanted slogans such as "Kurils are our land" and "We will not give away the Kurils" while a couple of young men performed a scene, where a man dressed-up in Russian national clothes beat a man wearing Japanese dress. "These islands will always belong to Russia and the next generation (of Russians), and the generation after that. They will never give those islands to Japan. That is why we came here to say that we will not give away the Kurils. We will not give away the Kurils." Maksim Mishenko, the leader of Young Russia, told journalists. The islands, called the Southern Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories by Japan, were seized by the Soviet Army near the end of World War II. Despite growing trade ties, the two countries have never signed a World War II peace treaty because of the competing claims to the islands in the southern Kuril chain. Soviet troops occupied the islands in the closing days of the war, but Tokyo claims the occupation was illegal and wants them returned. The islands, though small and remote, are surrounded by rich fishing waters, but they are also highly prone to seismic activity.
