Understanding Somaliland: History, Power & Politics Somaliland is one of the most politically unique territories in Africa — yet it is often misunderstood or oversimplified. In this episode of Thinking Africa, we explore the history of Somaliland and examine how colonial legacies, local governance traditions, post–Cold War collapse, and internal political choices shaped its current political system and regional position. Rather than focusing on recognition debates alone, this episode places Somaliland within its historical and institutional context, tracing developments from pre-colonial society and British administration to independence, union with Somalia, state collapse, and Somaliland’s self-declared political order. This discussion connects history to power, and power to politics, helping viewers understand how Somaliland developed relatively stable governance structures in a highly unstable region — without presenting advocacy or political endorsement. In this episode: Somaliland before colonial rule British Somaliland and the colonial legacy Independence, union with Somalia, and state collapse Local governance, clans, and political institutions Power, legitimacy, and regional geopolitics 📌 This content is educational and analytical.
