In this episode of the "Sacred Places of The Buddhists" video documentary, we are visiting the Sapta Parni Caves, near Rajgir, Bihar, India, the place where the First Buddhist Council was held. At this Buddhist council, or saṅgīti, which would literally translate as "reciting together" or "joint rehearsal", the Pali sutras that make up the collection now known as the Sutta Pitaka, or The Basket of Sutras, and the rules that make up the Vinaya Pitaka, The Basket of Discipline, were recited. These caves, also known as Saptaparni or Sattapanni, are today a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists from all over the world. English subtitles are available.
