I was fortunate enough to be flying at RAF Kenley with the Royal Air Force Air Cadets back in 1992, and eventually qualified as a solo glider pilot when I was 16 at West Malling (Its gone now). So here I am, 29 years later, back at Kenley Airfield, gliding again... (I've actually been here quite a few times with Air Cadets, its local.) Launching a Glider can be really exciting no matter how old you are, it never gets any less exciting! For those of you who want to go Gliding and may have seen it but have no idea if its safe or what goes on, here is a short video I shot of me being launched skywards in a Grob 103s Glider, in the hands of the Surrey Hills Gliding Club. When launching a glider using a winch, you can break it down into stages. Stage #01: With your parachute already on and securely fastened, sit on the edge of the glider and swing your legs over the top of the dashboard (I'm keeping the pilot speak to a minimum) and slide down into the seat. Your helper will then strap you into the Glider and explain how to release the seat-belts (And NOT the parachute) Stage #02: Once settled, prepare to close the canopy and you should see your wing person checking the cable for any signs of damage as they lay it out and prepare to attach it to the glider. When you are ready, close your canopy and await cable attachment. Stage #03: Secure the canopy and attach the cable to the Glider. At this point your aircraft is "live" and all around should be aware NOT to walk in front of any part of your glider. Stage #04: Wing-man brings wings level and is asked "All clear above and behind" to which they will hold the wingtip level and make sure there are no approaching aircraft or other gliders above you or approaching from behind. Stage #05: Take up the slack! Your wing-man will signal to the control tower to take up the slack in the cable via an arm movement, typically underarm, and often with a verbal command too. You should eventually see your cable in front of you start to move very slowly and straighten out. Stage #06: ALL OUT! Your wing-man will give a different arm signal and shout "All out" to the control tower who will then signal the winch operator to go to max power.. At this point, the wing-man will have your glider pulled out of their hand as you accelerate rapidly and leave the ground. Shortly after climbing to around 50ft, you will climb much steeper (So as not to strike the tail on the ground and to build up some speed) When you reach approx 1000ft (Give or take) you should be level and will dip your nose to release the tension in the cable and the cable can safely be released. That is how winch you launch a Glider.
