Civil Lines in Delhi is a residential area north of old Delhi. The area was captured by the British from Marathas in the Battle of Patparganj in 1803, and developed into a residential area and later a cantonment. It was destroyed in the Revolt of 1857 and later rebuild. Civil Lines, next to Delhi University has many colonial, Mughal and ancient Indian Monuments. Most notable of them are the Victory tower or Jeetgargh, Ashoka Pillar from Meerut, Flagstaff tower inside Kamala Nehru Ridge or Bonta Park and many more. It also has many colonial bungalows that are now either privately owned of government owned such as the Metcalf House.
