His first pieces were object animations, such as A szék / The Chair (1979), his later films and series were made with the use of clay, including Ad Astra (1981) Autótortúra / Motor Tour (1982), Sebaj Tóbiás / Nevermind Toby (1983–84) and Zeno (1985). He has won international fame with his dark themed sand animation films, such as Ab ovo – Homonyomok / Ab Ovo – Traces of Sand (1987), which won the prize for the best short film in Cannes, and Hamu (Ashes, 1993), which won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, as well as his claymation dystopias, such as Labirintus / Labirinth (1999), Pszichoparádé / Psycho-Parade (2001), or Arc / Face (2009). Without doubt, the most popular of Cakó’s work, both in Hungary and internationally, are his sand performances, which are sometimes performed to the accompaniment of music played by a full orchestra and have a kind of “Gesamtkunstwerk” effect. As his medium, Cakó uses ivy-colored sand on a glass table that is lit from below and filmed from above. The picture sequences, which are created live within the space of a moment, are reminiscent of his short stop motion films using sand.
