His first pieces were object animations, such as A sz茅k / The Chair (1979), his later films and series were made with the use of clay, including Ad Astra (1981) Aut贸tort煤ra / Motor Tour (1982), Sebaj T贸bi谩s / Nevermind Toby (1983鈥84) and Zeno (1985). He has won international fame with his dark themed sand animation films, such as Ab ovo 鈥 Homonyomok / Ab Ovo 鈥 Traces of Sand (1987), which won the prize for the best short film in Cannes, and Hamu (Ashes, 1993), which won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, as well as his claymation dystopias, such as Labirintus / Labirinth (1999), Pszichopar谩d茅 / Psycho-Parade (2001), or Arc / Face (2009). Without doubt, the most popular of Cak贸鈥檚 work, both in Hungary and internationally, are his sand performances, which are sometimes performed to the accompaniment of music played by a full orchestra and have a kind of 鈥淕esamtkunstwerk鈥 effect. As his medium, Cak贸 uses ivy-colored sand on a glass table that is lit from below and filmed from above. The picture sequences, which are created live within the space of a moment, are reminiscent of his short stop motion films using sand.
