When done in humility and truth it draws us close to God, sharpens our prayers, and opens doors for God to move. But fasting can also become empty ritual. People fast and fast, they pour out time and tears, and they feel nothing or worse, they leave discouraged and convinced their efforts were in vain. Today I want to walk with you through five common mistakes that cause God’s people to fast without being heard, and to give you practical, biblical corrections so your fasting leads to answers, not to frustration. Let us ask the Lord to teach us true fasting. Mistake 1. Fasting to Be Seen (Hypocrisy). Too many turn fasting into a public performance. They make sure everyone sees their sacrifice while their heart is looking for applause. Jesus warns us clearly: if our fasting is a show, the show is all we will get. The Bible says, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do... but when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face.” (The Bible says this in Matthew 6:16 to 18. a call to private humility.) God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). When our fast is staged for human praise, we have traded heavenly hearing for earthly attention. The Father is not impressed by public religion; He responds to private faithfulness. Fast quietly. Let your fast be between you and God. Keep your routine, pray in secret, and let God reward what the eye cannot see. Practically, tell only a trusted prayer partner if you need accountability; don’t announce every spiritual step on social media. Before you fast, ask: “Am I fasting to be seen?” If yes, repent and refocus on God alone. Mistake 2. Fasting With Wrong Motives (Selfishness). We sometimes fast for the wrong reasons: to manipulate God, to gain power, to prove we’re spiritual, or to get what we want without repentance. James gives a hard word about motives: our petitions are not answered when they originate in selfish craving. The Bible says, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives.” (James 4:3. a sober lesson about the heart behind our petitions.) God is not our spiritual vending machine. When our aim is self-glory, personal gain, or vindication, God will not bend His purposes to fit our selfish plans. Fasting is intended to align our will with God’s will, not to coerce heaven into serving our appetites. Examine your heart honestly. Convert requests into God-centered prayers: “Lord, let your will be done,” not simply “Lord, give me what I want.” Ask God to purify your motives before you fast. Write down your prayer requests; beside each, write the deeper spiritual motive. Pray, “Lord, change my heart to love what you love.”
