Delaware County String Band recording of "The Fightin' Phils" transferred by PhilaVideo from a 78 record. Song written by bandleader Elliot Lawrence and arranger Bix Reichner. It sold over 5,000 copies during the 1950 season. The recording was intended to be strictly a publicity stunt and the Elliot Lawrence band never actually recorded the song. If I am not mistaken, this is the only recording of the song ever made. The video is a home movie of the Elliot Lawrence band at Shibe Park on April 18, 1950; the Elliot Lawrence band performs at Shibe Park on Opening Day of 1950 with the Phillies hosting the Dodgers which explains the bunting throughout the stadium. The short bit of game action shows Robin Roberts walking to the mound and Richie Ashburn scoring from first on a double to center by Granny Hamner off Don Newcombe. Phillies won this day 9-1. From a home movie by drummer Howie Mann. Soundtrack: Elliot explains how they played at the Opening Day of the 1950 season on the "Land's Best bands" transcription disc. Don Wilson, announcer. Don Wilson was the announcer for the Jack Benny program. This film shows the band waiting for the game to start, the band performing their version of the "Fightin' Phils" and segments of the actual game. Members of the band watch the game from the stands. My father Joe Techner plays the trumpet at 00:51 and waves at the camera at 00:36. Film transferred from original 8mm film by PhilaVideo.
