730 looks at how social media is encouraging unhealthy dance moves 730 looks at how social media is encouraging unhealthy dance moves for the youth The worrying social media trend harming young dancers: Girls as young as 11 suffering painful injuries after attempting extreme dance moves they see online A trend has seen an increase in hip and back injuries in young dancers Dancers between 11 and 14 try to mimic dangerous stretching positions The positions are posted to social media and seen by thousands Professionals are urging dancers not to perform these unsafe moves The injuries will hinder a dancers chances at becoming a professional A new trend has seen an increase in hip and back injuries in young dancers who are attempting to copy dangerous stretching techniques posted to social media. Online images of adult dancers performing challenging gymnastic stretches have reportedly encouraged young dancers between 11 and 14 to mimic the manoeuvre - pushing their bodies past their limits. Professionals have deemed the practice 'unsafe' and say it may hinder young dancers' chances of becoming professional in the future, the ABC 7.30 report revealed. Positions that have been put to shame by industry professionals include the 'scorpion' and 'over split leg mount,' where a dancer puts their leg behind their head. Dance physiotherapist Lisa Howell told the ABC that: 'Children are pushing their bodies beyond their physical limits.' 'We're seeing labral tears (a tear in the hip point) and issues in their back,' said Ms Howell. 'While they're doing these moves to make themselves better dancers, they are often actually ruling themselves out of professional careers because they are getting injuries so young,' she continued. Professional dancers from the United States and Australia often have thousands of followers online and their social media updates are followed by young people. One dancer who suffered a stress fracture from the trend told the ABC if he hadn't copied the positions he could have avoided serious injury. Aaron Matheson, 18, said he was practicing the notorious 'scorpion' position when he 'collapsed to the ground.' The injuries have been called a dancers 'worst nightmare' by the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. The association commented that 'every dancer's body is different. Some dancers are inherently less flexible.' Attempting these positions as seen performed by professionally trained people, can be extremely detrimental to the development of a young dancer's technique. Dancers with 'tight' bodies are built for stability, with 'dense connective tissues,' commented the association. While dancers with 'loose' bodies should spend less time stretching. 'It is important to avoid comparing flexibility of one dancer with that of other dancers,' said the association. The association also said: 'It is vital to not push the body too hard.' 'Pushing stretches too hard may cause muscle strain,' they continued. With a 15 percent participation rate increase seen in June, more young people are starting to dance, hoping to become famous, which has also fueled this trend, reported The Sydney Morning Herald. In a study by the University of Sydney in 2010 (with data from 2008), the risk of chronic injury for dancers under the age of 14 can also come from over training. These young dancers are seen training more than 8.5 hours a week, while 'elite' dancers train 15 hours a week. Benefits to overworking the body have been minimal if at all, and industry professionals have urged young dancers to 'take care of themselves' and not 'push to hard,' because this will ultimately cease their dancing careers.
