DR Congo: Convicted War Criminal Lubanga Announces New Rebel Group | Firstpost Africa | N18G Convicted war criminal Thomas Lubanga has announced a new rebel group named the Convention for the Popular Revolution. The group will be active in DRC's eastern Ituri province. Thomas Lubanga was the first person to be convicted by the International Criminal Court in 2012 on charges of recruiting child soldiers. He was released in 2020. After his release, DRC President Félix Tshisekedi controversially appointed him to a task force to bring peace to Ituri. But in 2022, he was taken hostage for two months by another rebel group. He blames his abduction on the DRC government. After being freed, he relocated to Uganda. He announced his new rebel group from Uganda’s capital, Kampala, to retake Ituri province.
