Abid Bahri is leader and co-founder of the Luthomania Quartet in Belgium. He is a Brussels autodidact of Moroccan descent, who shines as a composer and as a soloist on Oud en guembri. He surrounds himself with fellow players from Belgium, Morocco and even China. For this concert he alternates the enchanting sonority of his instruments with that of cello and pipa. In addition to Bahri, the ensemble consists of Aurélia Boven on cello, Hua Xia on pipa (Chinese lute) and percussionist Ahmed Khaili on def, udu and derbuka. During its first edition Dancing Strings Festival presents the 'ud as a modern musical instrument, an instrument that is open to new influences and experimentation with other art disciplines. The 'ud is a fretless short neck lute with five double strings, a single bass string and a pear-shaped sound box, which is said to have been around for over 2,500 years. The cliché of the 'ud as just an Arabic instrument is outdated. In Dancing Strings Festival, contemporary lute players from home and abroad show how a musical tradition develops into a modern movement with exciting compositions.
