(2 Jul 2000) English/Nat XFA The Dalai Lama has spoken of his optimism that peace and compassion at a meeting attended by thousands of people meeting at National Mall in Washington on Sunday . The Tibetan spiritual leader told the crowd that he's not a miracle worker or a living Buddha. And he said they don't need religion to see that hatred, anger and jealousy are harmful. He enforced the Buddhist belief that suffering cannot be resolved by turning to the external world. The Dalai Lama added that human nature isn't inherently bad - if it was, he said, there would be no hope for the future. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Sometimes people call me a living Buddha. That actually - the idea of that very term, living Buddha - is, I think, a mistake. So in (the) Tibetan words, Lama or Guru, there is no such meaning as a living Buddha. So that very term is (a) mistake." That's unfortunate." SUPER CAPTION: the Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader SOUNDBITE: (English) "So some people even have, I think, a very pessimistic sort of attitude that human nature is bad. That's, I think, a mistake. If human nature is really bad, than (there is) no use to talk about a future."
