FINALLY FOUND!! Originally composed for Kennywood Park in 2001, the Phantom's Revenge theme music was used in commercials to advertise the transformation of Steel Phantom by DH Morgan Manufacturing. The 30-second theme was available for download from Kennywood's site in 2001 but has long since been removed. Special thanks to Jim DiSpirito himself for sharing it with me! More about the track: Jim DiSpirito has worked on numerous musical projects that have challenged his skills as a composer. But the Rusted Root percussionist was confronted by a different sort of problem when he was asked to write the music that will greet riders of the revamped Phantom's Revenge roller coaster at Kennywood Park: Just how do you write music for a conveyance that reaches a top speed of 85 MPH? 'The creative challenge from a composer's point was to try to create a piece of music that worked with the motion, whether it was the image or the sensation of being on the ride,' DiSpirito says. 'When I wrote the piece, I just imagined myself being on a roller coaster, and I used aspects of speed and samples of wind, samples that moved across the stereo field, a rumbling, frenetic drum thing that comes to this screeching, windful end.' To research the project, DiSpirito scouted out the location at Kennywood to get an idea of the landscape and terrain. He then worked with guitarist and songwriter Dave Hanner to compose the piece. The two have worked together before, notably writing and performing the theme music for WQED-TV's 'On Q' program. DiSpirito also has worked on music for films, notably 'The Bread, My Sweet,' an independent movie made in Pittsburgh that recently took first place at the Santa Monica Film Festival. But this endeavor, he admits, is close to his heart. 'I jumped at the chance,' he says. 'How often do you get a chance to work with an organization that is so steeped in the hearts and memories of so many Pittsburghers? As well as roller coaster enthusiasts around the world, which is its own cult.' The Phantom's Revenge, which replaces The Steel Phantom at Kennywood, is scheduled to open in late May. DiSpirito is eager to try it out. 'I'm already in line,' he says. #PhantomsRevenge #Kennywood #SteelPhantom
