Enjoy some footage of one of the most unique and special rail systems in the world. The Schwebebahn in Wuppertal, Germany, is one of very few suspension railways ever built, and it is the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world. This video contains observations from several stations across the 8.3-mile system, including the western and eastern termini at Vohwinkel and Oberbarmen, respectively, as well as Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof (Central Station). Much of the line's track—and many of the stations—are built directly above the River Wupper, as this was the only realistic alignment for the corridor to be built on. The Schwebebahn's trains have been hanging from the tracks since 1901 and now carry 82,000 daily riders daily. The system lends itself well to Wuppertal's unique geography, which sees the city with a pronounced east-west spread along the River Wupper. As such, the Schwebebahn serves much of the city by following the river and major road corridors.
