Over the years, Speedy had crafted many rifles for me, each one more impressive than the last. But this build was different. We weren’t just putting together another rifle—we were creating something special. The idea was to pair a Bat 3LL action with a stunning torrefied flame maple stock. What really made it unique, though, was the wood itself. I got the chance to source it from American Hardwood, which, as luck would have it, was only about 45 minutes from my home. I spent the better part of an afternoon at their mill, hand-picking the perfect piece of wood for this project. There’s something deeply satisfying about being that hands-on in the process. Once I had the wood, I sent it to a stock maker I’d worked with many times before. We agreed he could turn it out in a couple of weeks—if I paid upfront. Well, weeks turned into months, and then months stretched into over two years. I finally got the wood back, but by then, the project had stalled, and I needed someone who could pick up where it had left off. That’s when I called Dennis Ray. He was at the 2024 Southwest Nationals, and without hesitation, he agreed to take on the challenge that someone else had left unfinished. Dennis worked his magic, and before long, I had a beautifully crafted stock in my hands. It was raw, but I could see the potential—it just needed the right finishing touches. That’s when Speedy went to work. He did all the prep, then sent the stock over to Brett Childress to handle the paint. But we didn’t want just any finish. We had something specific in mind—something akin to the guitar industry’s dyeing technique. After a few calls, Brett agreed to take it on. And when I saw the result, I was floored. The finish wasn’t just beautiful—it was beyond anything I had imagined. The flame maple came to life in ways that were almost too good to be true. The stock went back to Speedy for the final assembly, and that’s when the magic really happened. The craftsmanship was flawless, the attention to detail was second to none, and the end result was a rifle that looked like it belonged in a museum. Now, I just hope that after all the effort these fine men put into this beautiful build that I can do it justice on the line. But as Speedy always says, “If you can’t shoot good, at least look good doing it.” A huge thank you to Dennis Ray, Brett Childress, and especially Speedy Gonzalez for bringing The Phoenix to life.
