Well, you're going to get a bunch of emails and documents, including a receive a medical bill from the health care provider and an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurance provider. These can be confusing documents, so let's walk through an example and breakdown of what they mean. Medical Bill Details Account Number: You’re going to need this when paying a bill! Service Date: When you received care Charges: prices of the services you received Adjustment: The amount the healthcare provider isn’t charging you. Insurance Payments: What your insurance pays Patient Payments: what you need to pay Balance/ Amount Due: The remaining amount you need to pay Payable to: Who to write your check to! But you’ll prob pay online, right? You’ll also receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) from your insurer, explaining: The medical services you received and the cost, including a breakdown of the following: Money you saved by going through your insurance network Amount paid by the insurer What you still owe All in all, these documents will show you how much you owe and how much your insurance provider has paid. Be sure to reach out to the health care provider directly if you have questions about the medical bill, or to the insurance company if what you’re seeing on the EOB doesn’t match up.
