Stay on top of the Greenroof & Greenwall World by subscribing here: http://bit.ly/1HAbujW Completed in 100 days in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the "Hospital de Emergencias Enfermera Isabel Zendal" was named in homage to Isabel Zendal, a Spanish nurse who brought smallpox vaccinations to South America and Asia in the early 1800s. Designed by "Chile 15 Arquitectos", the Emergency Hospital encompasses three large pavilion buildings with 1,008 beds and 48 ICUs. The health center for pandemic crises supports the entire hospital network of the Madrid Health Service in the event of any emergency, health crisis or healthcare need. Designed by "Cristina Jorge of Cjcpaisaje", the topography was modified to conserve rainwater and directed to landscaped green areas to act as sponges to reduce runoff, store water, remove sediment and pollutants, and release it into other ecosystems. Of the five landscaped areas, the green roof belongs to Area 1; the others are on natural terrain. Due to dry climatic conditions, adapted plant species with low water demand were selected, reducing the risk of allergies and respiratory problems. Creating a natural system of protection, the landscape architecture takes as reference the simple integrated system of living microorganisms in the regulation of climate change. Plant palettes reflect Spanish landscapes, specifically: The Protection System or the Cell Wall represents the "Sierra Norte"; the Meeting Point or Nucleus DNA represents the "Estepa Sur"; and the Circulation System or Vacuoles represents the "Vega Campiña". Employing Soprema waterproofing and other materials, the sprawling green roof is partly located over the underground technical galleries, currently used to store medical and surgical supplies. Shown in orange, the extensive green roof areas have a depth of 20 centimeters, encompassing 1,347 square meters. The 50 to 100 cm-deep intensive greenroof area is shown in yellow with an area of 1,068 square meters. The micro-parklands provide isolated areas where people can meet in small homogeneous controlled groups instead of creating a large homogeneous park for everyone. These micro-enclosures provide circular areas for patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals to meet safely in secluded places surrounded by trees and shrubs or to walk around large green islands. The "Hospital de Emergencias Enfermera Isabel Zendal" Greenroof & Gardens is intended to be a part of the machine to heal and to provide relief from the stress and emotional trauma of the Covid-19 hospital environment.
