If you are in the process of graduating, you will need to decide if you are going to take the National counseling exam or the National clinical mental health counseling exam. There are two major exams, the NCE and the NCMHCE. Let’s break down the differences. The NCE or the national counselor‘s examination is a multiple choice exam developed by the NBC C. It has broad knowledge across eight core areas of counseling like human growth and development, ethics, assessment, and career development. You’ll answer 200 multiple-choice questions in about four hours. The focus is more on foundational knowledge and theoretical understanding and think of textbook based questions. The NCMHCE or the National clinical mental health counseling exam is different. It’s much more clinical. Instead of multiple-choice questions you work through case simulations. You’ll be asked to make decisions about diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical interventions. It’s the real world scenarios that you might face in practice. There are 10 to 12 clinical cases each with multiple parts and it is more interactive and applied than the national counseling exam.
