I am fascinated and inspired by wildlife research. It’s the main thing that anchors my fine art and cartooning practice during this part of my life. I have been honored to get to know some of the students and faculty doing research projects for Sul Ross State University’s Borderlands Research Institute and was delighted to receive an invitation to join Emily Blumentritt, Dr. Maureen Frank and a group of other volunteers to survey birds at stock tank sites on a west Texas ranch. Like much of BRI’s work, the study is focused on learning more about wildlife habitat use and preferences, so we can determine the best way to manage land resources in ways that benefit both the human landowners and our non-human neighbors. I accompanied Maureen to one of the study sites and we saw two different species of Longspurs: Thick-billed Longspurs (Rhynchophanes mccownii) and Chestnut-collared Longspurs (Calcarius ornatus). I did quick sketches of both for this video. See more of my artwork at https://chrisruggia.com
