Learning how to paint or speak another language is not something that can only be achieved by infants and children. Here, Dr. Rachel Wu dispels these myths by sharing inspiring stories of how she's learned new creative abilities and how other adults can do the same, backed by her own research. Dr. Rachel Wu is an Associate Professor of Psychology at University of California, Riverside. She completed her Ph.D. in Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London (2011). She is a developmental cognitive neuroscientist investigating how we learn and attend across the lifespan. Dr. Wu received a Rising Star award from the Association for Psychological Science and an NSF CAREER award grant to investigate the role of learning new skills on cognitive and functional growth in older adulthood. She was in a rock band as a violinist for 7 years (2003-2010) and also is a professional painter. Every few years, she learns to master new skills to gain a better understanding of the difficulties in being an adult learner. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
