Decades of Indigenous specific funding has created long-term dependency. For many Indigenous people experiencing disadvantage it is because of geography or access to services more than their culture or heritage. Disadvantaged Indigenous Australians require access to the full spectrum of support just like any other Australian. To overcome Indigenous disadvantage, remove financial incentives for self-identification. Remove out-dated assumptions that bind Indigenous people to Indigenous-specific services. Support to Indigenous people needs to be comparable in terms of access, value and accountability as mainstream services. Overcoming disadvantage for and by Indigenous Australians will require collaboration and self-agency. We will do this by supporting each person, household or community – not based on race – but by crafting solutions according to their circumstances and challenges. As we work together, we will hold each other to account.
