Once numbering in the hundreds, today fewer than a couple dozen are believed to survive. But how did this shy, small porpoise reach the edge of extinction? In this video, we explore the shocking truth behind the Vaquita’s decline and the urgent conservation programs fighting to save it from disappearing forever. The main reason Vaquitas became critically endangered is illegal gillnet fishing — especially for the totoaba fish, whose swim bladder is sold on the black market for high prices. These large gillnets, meant for totoaba, unintentionally trap and drown Vaquitas, which must surface to breathe. Despite fishing bans, protected zones, and international pressure, illegal netting continued in the Gulf of California, pushing the species to near collapse within just a few decades. Conservation efforts have included permanent gillnet bans, the creation of the Vaquita Refuge Area, patrol operations by the Mexican Navy, removal of illegal “ghost nets,” and global campaigns to stop the totoaba trade. Environmental groups like Sea Shepherd have worked alongside Mexican authorities to monitor and protect the remaining Vaquitas. Advanced acoustic monitoring systems are also used to detect Vaquita clicks and track their survival in the wild. The Vaquita’s story is a powerful reminder of how human activity can rapidly drive a species to extinction — but also how global cooperation can offer hope. Can conservation programs still save the Vaquita? What lessons does this crisis teach us about marine biodiversity and illegal wildlife trade? Watch till the end to understand the science, the politics, and the race against time to protect one of Earth’s most endangered creatures. ✅ Subscribe To Our Other YouTube Channels: Theneer Idaivelai: / @theneeridaivelai Naattu Nadappu: / @naattunadappu Skiddy: / @skiddytamil Lets Dance: / @letsdance3608 Welcome to Streetlight!
