How to be Big in Japan! / How to Join the Japanese Entertainment Industry When I first came to Tokyo, I was pretty clueless on how to even get into the gaijin, or foreign, talent/acting/modeling industry in Japan. But I knew there was a way since I had seen many foreign actors acting pretty terrible (like myself) on Japanese TV shows. Here is how I found out how to be a part of it, and my take on the best way to get into it. The link below explains the industry as well, but basically Japan has very few foreigners, and even fewer foreigners registered to such agencies, so sometimes they just need anyone for a certain job. A lot of these TV shows require no acting experience, but you may still have to audition for a role if there are speaking parts. Imagine it being mostly "extra" work. Even if you have a speaking role for some reenactment dramas on TV, they almost always dub these over with a Japanese voice actor/actress, so I have literally seen people say "REFRIGERATOR" while pretending to yell something in English on set. It's dubbed, so it doesn't matter. Just don't act like an ass and it'll be okay. Basically, as long as you can do it, they'll hire you. Don't expect landing a movie role with a full part and name in the credits if you have no acting experience.
