Can we actually reach the Moon this decade? Will we actually reach the Moon again this decade? That’s the question on many people’s minds. NASA has been promising a return to the Moon for years, but delays and shifting timelines have made some wonder if it's really going to happen. Fortunately, there’s been a recent update that sheds new light on the path ahead. NASA’s latest Assessment of Major Projects report was recently released, and it includes the most current timeline for the Artemis program. So today, we’ll take a closer look at that report—and also, examine the progress being made by NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin—to assess whether landing astronauts on the Moon before 2030 is still a realistic goal. Basically, Artemis is a series of missions to get astronauts back into lunar orbit and eventually onto the Moon’s surface. It takes a ton of coordination—between NASA, private companies, and international partners—to pull it off. Early missions are all about setting up a long-term presence around the Moon. Later on, the focus shifts to sending astronauts to Mars. Each mission’s a bit different, but they mostly come down to three main parts: the Orion spacecraft and SLS rocket to get humans into space, and the Human Landing System—which SpaceX and Blue Origin are both developing—to actually land the crew on the Moon. SpaceX President reveals Starship HLS progress to get Back to the Moon, even NASA? The GAO report laid out the current timeline for the Human Landing System (HLS). It says the HLS Initial Capability project is staying within the cost and schedule baselines that NASA set back in December 2023. According to the plan, a key milestone—the lunar orbit checkout review—is scheduled for February 2028. That review will assess whether the HLS Starship is ready for the Artemis III mission and able to receive astronauts from the Orion spacecraft in lunar orbit. NASA set the baseline life-cycle cost for the HLS Initial Capability at around $4.9 billion. That budget covers everything through the post-mission assessment review, which is basically a deep dive into how Artemis III went. That review has to happen within 30 days after the mission wraps up. SpaceX conducted three successful flights of the Starship between June 2024 and November 2024. Two separate flights in January and March 2025 were not successful.
