I sat down with a man whose student ID cards are separated by sixty-six years. Professor Mark Nwagwu first entered the University of Ibadan in 1957. He graduated, became a legendary Cell Biologist, and eventually retired. He had nothing left to prove. But in 2023, at the age of 86, he did the unthinkable: He returned to the exact same university to enroll as a PhD student in Anthropology. Why? Because for Mark, science could no longer explain his world. In this 40-minute deep dive, we explore how Prof. Mark pivoted from studying cells to immortalizing love. He has arguably created the highest number of literary references to a single partner in modern history—dedicating entire collections of poetry to his late wife, Helen. From 1957 to today, this is a conversation about love, loss, and why it is never, ever too late to reinvent yourself. In this video, we discuss: The transition from Cell Biology to Anthropology at age 86. The reality of grief and channeling loss into art. The legacy of Helen Nwagwu and the power of enduring love. Life lessons from 8 decades of academic and personal excellence. #MarkNwagwu #UniversityOfIbadan #AfricanStories #Documentary #LifeLessons #Grief #Reinvention
