In this harm reduction video, we provide a step-by-step guide on how to clean a syringe with bleach. The best practice to reduce HIV transmission is to use a sterile syringe and equipment for each injection. Bleaching the syringe using proper technique can lower risk of HIV transmission associated with reusing or sharing syringes in cases where new sterile ones aren't available. Individuals at risk for HIV transmission should be screened for HIV and speak to a healthcare professional about ways to get pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for prevention of HIV. NOTE: The content in this video is part of the Harm Reduction Educational Series, education geared towards healthcare professionals to help reduce the risks and potential harms associated with drug use in patients who use substances.
