We were asked to look at a Double-A base award situation in Pensacola as 1B Umpire Raul Moreno called a dead ball down the line after an overthrow. Report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2022/... On first glance, with a play starting with a runner on first base, it would appear to be a simple case of a ball going out of play (falling into the on-field bullpen) due to a throw, so two bases from time-of-pitch (first play by an infielder/the catcher). But on closer inspection, we see that someone in the bullpen voluntarily fielded the live ball, picking it up with their glove before it had otherwise become dead. As a result, this is intentional interference, Official Baseball Rule 6.01(d), which is determined by the authorized person's actions as opposed to their "intent" the way that word is used to rule on a pitcher throwing at a batter. By picking up the live ball voluntarily, it is "intentional" interference, even if the person interfered in good faith assuming the ball was foul or whatever other reason. Had the interference been unintentional (e.g., the ball caromed off the person, who did nothing voluntarily to interfere), the ball would have remained alive and in play. But because the interference was intentional (e.g., the substitute player/coach/ball attendant voluntarily picked up the ball), the penalty is to nullify the act similar to Obstruction Type 2 (B). in this case, the crew determined that had interference not occurred, baserunner R1 would have scored and the batter-runner would have wound up at second base, so R1 was awarded home plate and BR given second base.
