Ten german destroyers came in the early morning on the 9th april 1940. One of them was the oldest zerstörer Z2 Georg Thiele. After sinking the PS Norge, the ten german destroyers didn`t get any resistens from the norwegians. Troops were landed to protect the city from enemies. The port needed to be secured for transport the heavy iron ore to germany, the most needed metal for more war-machineprodustions. On the 10th april, british navy entered the Ofot-fjord to protect the norwegian from german intruders. The battle on the fjord, sunk a huge amount of iron-oreships, HMS Hardy and badly damaged several german destroyers. Anton Schmidt and Wilhelm Heidkamp got severe hits and was almost sunken in the harbour. English navy took a step back. On the 13th they`re back for more. HMS Hood and several british destroyers went back to fight back the german forces. The battle ended in the deep Rombaksfjord with most of the german destroyers with troops, ending on shore. In the long narrow Rombaksfjord, Hans Lüdemann, Wolfgang Zenker and Bernd von Arnim, ran ashore in Rombaksbotn. Georg Thiele was further out to protect their escape.
