On September 4, 2019, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settlement with YouTube was resolved for violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for a record $170 million dollars. YouTube is putting the responsibility of their disarray on millions of creators to comply with COPPA. “If you fail to set your audience accurately, you may face compliance issues with the FTC or other authorities, and we may take action on your YouTube account,” according to YouTube’s help center page. Given that YouTube wants everyone to share the blame by punishing its creators by complying with COPPA because they cannot do their own jobs.
