Shawn Van Gruen suffers from a rare condition known as popliteal artery entrapment syndrome. The condition compresses muscles and tissues in his lower limbs. The pain from the rare disease became so bad that it left doctors will little choice but to remove both of Shawn's legs from the knee down. But those surgeries did little to relieve the pain. The stinging feeling in his nerves limited his use of his prosthetic legs for a long period of time. But this was before his latest surgery, his 25th procedure to his legs, conducted at the Cowichan District Hospital under the guidance of Doctor Alexander Anzarut. Dr. Anzarut determined the pain originated from trapped nerves beneath the knee. The doctor took the nerve and rather than cutting it back moved to a new location up into the thigh. The end result saw Shawn walking pain-free for the first time in over a decade. The 50-year-old credits the doctor with giving him a new lease on life.
