EUROPE'S GIANT CONSTRUCTION SITE: Frankfurt Airport’s Massive Terminal 3 – Aviation’s Next Level – Part 2 Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 3: A Mega Project Takes Shape – A New Era for Germany’s Largest Airport Germany’s largest airport in Frankfurt am Main will have Europe’s most modern terminal 3 for 4 billion euros, spanning a total area of over 400,000 square meters. “So that makes our new Terminal 3 larger than Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn or Hamburg airports,” says Overall Project Manager Christian Bierend. Beginning in 2026, up to 20 million passengers are expected to arrive and depart here each year. Now the time has come for the final stages of the expansion. So a two-story control room has to be built in the tower, at a height of nearly 70 meters, to create a workspace for controllers. Later on, the bridge buildings and main building under construction will provide access to the aircraft, among other things. Another main focus is on interior construction. Workers lay wiring ducts and underfloor heating in the piers. Long elevators and extra sloping moving walkways are installed. With elements of the baggage-handling systems still being connected at the rear of the facility, the first test runs have already begun at the front. A visual highlight is the suspended droplet ceiling in the future Market Hall located in the main building of the terminal. To accomplish this, the team of construction mechanics headed by Stefan Schmidt have to install 25 kilometers of curved tubing: “We have to attach a total of around 3,000 brightly shiny anodized aluminum tubes to the substructure. Each part is unique and is bent here by a tube-bending machine on site.” Industrial climbers put the tubes in place one by one and attach them. At the same time, the team working on the Sky Line railway have received the first car, which will soon be piloted fully automatically over the 5.6-kilometer route. Project Manager Wolfgang Holzhausen supervises the unloading and hoisting at a height of 18 meters. “This is a very special milestone for us, because the train car is naturally the heart of a transportation system like this one. After all, this vehicle will be a big part of our passengers’ experience in the truest sense of the word. But until then, we still have a lot of work to do here.” Because Europe’s largest infrastructure project is still one thing above all others: a mega construction site.
