(18 Oct 2002) 1. Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad coming in for news conference 2. Cutaway cameras 3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysian Prime Minister: "The so called Malaysian suspect is not a Malaysian - he is actually an Indonesian who was given permanent resident status in Malaysia and has since returned to Indonesia. He is not in Malaysia now. He is the principal suspect but he claims that he is not involved in these attacks, and it is up to the Indonesians to take whatever action that they think fit. But certainly if this man comes to Malaysia, we would arrest him. We have no doubt about his involvement in such activities while he was in Malaysia." 4. Photographers 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysian Prime Minister: "We are against any attack on Iraq, especially if the attack is made without the UN agreeing to it. We feel that such attacks will only aggravate the situation, make people more inclined to think that as a general rule, there is animosity against Muslim nations and because of that there may be more recruits in the terrorist organisations." 6. Reporter's notebook 7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysian Prime Minister: "We have to formulate a common stand on how nations should act where it involves international problems - whether they should act alone or they should act after being sanctioned by, say, the United Nations. We feel that the United Nations is being neglected, so the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Countries) we believe has a role to play because they represent a goodly number of people in this world." 8. Mohamad leaving STORYLINE : Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Friday that a Malaysian wanted in connection with the Bali night club bombing was in fact an Indonesian who was living in Malaysia, and has since left the country. On Thursday, Malaysian authorities had said they believe the unnamed man, an Islamic militant with extensive bomb-making skills, was involved in the Bali attack, which left at least 183 people dead and hundreds injured. Addressing a news conference at the end of a two-day visit to India, Mahathir said the suspect would be arrested if he set foot on Malaysian soil. Asked about the Iraq crisis, Mahathir said the United Nations was being neglected in formulating a response to international problems. Mahathir, who promotes a moderate and tolerant form of Islam in his own country, has for a long time been critical of US policies. Strongly opposed to US military action against Iraq, Mahathir warned that moves to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein would only provoke greater animosity among Muslims against the US and Europe, and create more recruits to terrorism. Later on Friday, Mahathir will head to Pakistan for talks with President General Pervez Musharraf and to open a power station belonging to Malaysia's energy utility, Tenaga Nasional, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said. From Islamabad, Mahathir is then scheduled to travel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he will deliver a speech at a business conference and meet Saudi business figures. His trip concludes on October 21.
