The station of the S-Bahn is located below the Warschauer Bridge. South of the Warschauer Brücke is Warschauer Straße U-Bahn station, the terminus of the U-Bahn line, which is designed as an elevated line at this point. At the Warschauer Straße junction, where the tram coming from Frankfurter Tor ends in addition to the subway coming from the western city centre, more than 85,000 people changed trains every day in 2012. The underground station and the adjoining elevated railway line are listed buildings. The underground station at Warschauer Brücke was built according to designs by the design office of Siemens & Halske and put into operation on August 17, 1902. It is the terminus of Berlin's first elevated railway line, today's U1 and U3 lines, and consists of a 360-metre-long and 26-metre-wide brick viaduct, in the arches of which shops, workshops and business premises were accommodated. The Warsaw Bridge terminus was also the site of the first workshop of the Berlin Elevated and Underground Railway. The four-track hall parallel to the railway line was reconstructed as part of the reopening of the station in 1995 and has since been used as a covered storage facility. The eight-track wagon hall I, which was built in 1909 at right angles to the elevated station along Rudolfstraße, is also only used as a storage hall. At the end of the Second World War, the station was closed; it did not go back into operation until 14 October 1945. With the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the station was closed again, as it was the only station on the line in the eastern part of the city. The rooms were converted into storage rooms, among other things for the Berlin light bulb factory Narva. After German reunification, the Warschauer Brücke underground station was restored according to monument preservation criteria. The tracks were also rebuilt, so that the station retained only three platform tracks instead of four, but these were extended for the use of 8-car trains. The station went back into operation on 14 October 1995, as a transfer station to the S-Bahn station directly to the north, now under its name Warschauer Straße. Initially, the trains ran alternately as line U1 to Krumme Lanke and as line U15 to Uhlandstraße. On 12 December 2004, the Nollendorfplatz – Krumme Lanke line became an independent U3 line, and the U15 was renamed U1. On certain occasions (e.g. during construction work), the U12 line also runs temporarily in the direction of Ruhleben. ⚠️ Our videos are copyrighted material owned by the channel DaisyRoutes.
