Do you suffer with: acid reflux, bloating, gas, nausea or constipation? How about heart palpitations (but you don't have heart disease), shortness of breath (you don't have lung disease), anxiety or a lump in your throat? Educational content reviewed by licensed APRN medical staff. Not personal medical advice. In the video, Dr Vikki Petersen explains why these are all symptoms of vagus nerve irritation. How? The vagus nerve travels along your esophagus and passes through the same opening in your diaphragm. When your stomach is pushed upwards into yur esophagus, compression and irritation results and the vagus nerve encounters abnormal signaling between the brain and your gut - creating the symptoms just mentioned. With the vagus irritated or compresses you also get impaired LES function - the lower sphincter of the esophagus, thereby causing acid reflux to occur. The nervous system becomes dysfunctional and the symptoms created include: heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest tightness, a lump in yur throat and/or anxiety. Inflammation occurs with the acid reflux and esophagus inflammation vurther ittiating the vagus nerve. It becomes a vicious cycle of vagus irritation, weaker LES and therefore more reflux and aggravated hiatal hernia. There are, fortunately, natural solutions in the following categories: Alignment Support of the vagus itself Improving the gut environment Lowering intra-abdominal pressure Nutrient Support Let's look at each one in turn: Alignment - getting a diaphragm release from a trained clinician who can also teach you an effective self-maneuver, can relax the diaphragm and take pressure off the vagus. Additionally, posture correction of the neck, upper back and core muscles reduce vagus irritation. Support the vagus nerve with exercises you can easily do on your own. Watch the video as I demonstrate the physiological sigh, humming (a specific way to do it), along with an exercise to increase your HRV. Improve the gut environment - you can reduce reflux triggers by avoiding certain foods (listen to the video for the list), heal inflammation and optimize stomach acid - you may have too little stomach acid! I review this in the video. Lower the pressure - meaning within your abdomen by addressing constipation, belly weight and bloat. I give several suggestions in the video such as: soluble fiber, water, polyphenols, omega-3s, and avoiding ultra-processed foods. Also avoid tight clothes, lifting heavy and coughing by getting to the root cause of why the cough is occurring - it could be silent reflux! Lastly nutient support - by mindful that taking PPIs lowers your calcium, magnesium, vitamin B12, iron and zinc. Working with a clinician savvy in getting to the root cause of other deficiencies and imbalances can really help here as well. #acidreflux #guthealth #rootcausemedicine Disclaimer: The information provided in this video is intended for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
