Welcome to the second instalment of our #behindthescenes of the UL Reading Rooms. This is the Rare books reading room whose collections cover all subjects of study and include material from the first European printing presses in the fifteenth century up to the present day, and publications from all parts of the world. The Department is responsible for most of the older printed material in the Library, as well as more recent publications which require special care or which have interesting provenances. Since a lot of these items require special care we ask that you help us to protect and preserve them by following a few guidelines: Please use only pencils and computers for taking notes. We don't like pens, highlighters or sticky notes. Please support your books while reading them. Book stands are on all tables, cushions can be found under the windows, and book weights (snakes) are available at the desk. Please return your books to the Reading Room staff when you leave; they can be reserved if you would like to consult them again. No food or drink may be brought into the Room, including bottled water. For the security of our collections, we need to ensure that no Rare Books are removed from the Reading Room. A member of staff will check your belongings at the exit gate when you leave. You can order Rare Books on paper slips within the Reading Room or by email to [email protected]. If you need help in the room, please ask a member of staff to help complete the slip. Photography of books fetched to the Room is allowed, subject to the condition of the book. If you would like to photograph an item, please show it to a member of staff first. Stay tuned for our next behind the scenes of the Manuscript room coming soon.
